Training to be a counsellor was not what was on my list of to do’s bucket list.

My earlier thoughts were that of airhostess. I loved the uniform and the excitement of being around the world, but that didn’t quite materialise and instead I decided to train in a completely different area involving Customer Services and Entering CounsellingAdministration, and in my spare time had a love for Sport and Drama.

But there’s always been something in me that has a heart for people, from the infant to the senior, where it either awakens the child in me to go down a slide or rekindle the feeling of being on a swing, to listening to the words of wisdom in the mature; it touches my heart!

So from a background of providing, customer service, dance, drama, administration and hospitality, very hands on practical activities, why then did I have this urge to learn counselling, and feel that taking on something like this would be up my street?

It started approximately 7 years ago, with my involvement with young people and the complexity of issues that they were facing at a young age, along with the many issues that was becoming known to me that others were facing and the listening ear I would give. I went on an introduction to have a taster of what counselling was all about and never looked back. To my surprise it was not what I was expected. I actually thought counselling was about providing advice, having the right knowledge to signpost, but that’s for Citizen’s Advice.

What I did learn was to be an eye opener, and I was amazed how much I needed to, and did learn about myself. I’ve now almost completed my Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Studies. It’s been quite a journey!!
