I strongly believe that everyone is a wonderfully unique individual with an innate capacity for change and growth. As such I welcome you not only with my expertise, but with an open heart and a spirit of hope.

    How can I help?

I can help you to explore and make sense of previous events and recurring patterns in your life such as childhood experiences, trauma, relationship problems and breakdowns. By exploring your issues in the confidential space I offer, your understanding of how you have arrived at this current position in life will increase. I will listen to you with great attention and respect. Over the years, I have helped many people to reach a place of acceptance and fresh insight on how to move forward positively.

Motivation, enthusiasm and joy are often absent qualities for someone who is stressed, anxious or depressed. I am able to work in a Solution Focused way to assist you identify your strengths, achieve your goals and regain a greater sense of purpose. I have found this particular approach to be a powerful vehicle for change and transformation.

    My Counselling Approach

I offer a solution–focused counselling approach that is underpinned by person centred values and is in keeping with the British Association For Counselling and Psychotherapy Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions. My approach is both collaborative and relational providing a compassionate, non-judgemental, real and empathic relationship for my clients to help them overcome problems and adversities that they face.

My work is always tailor made to meet the specific needs of each client and I draw on a variety of counselling approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Gestalt and Psychodynamic Therapy.

    Who do I work with?

I work with adults including individuals aged fourteen and above offering short and long-term therapy as appropriate.

I offer a non-discriminatory service and I place great value on diversity welcoming clients from all faiths, cultural backgrounds and of all sexual orientations.

    Specialist Interests and Experience

I always strive to be professional, creative and resourceful in my work with clients. I have had particular success working with client issues such as Social Anxiety, Anger Management, Relationship Difficulties and problems with Self-Esteem; however, the range of issues I can help clients with is wide and varied.

I have provided counselling and psychotherapy to clients for over ten years. I have worked with clients within the voluntary sector, as well as in my own private practice. I receive referrals from Professional Counselling Registers (such as the BACP), from Employee Assistance Programmes, and referrals from Birmingham IAPT (Increased Access to Psychological Therapy) services. I also proven track record of providing counselling support to NHS medical staff and other health professionals.

I am also a Clinical Supervisor of both Trainee and Qualified Counsellors. A Clinical Supervisor oversees the practice of counsellors to ensure their work with clients is ethical, and that the counsellor’s interventions are correct and in the best interests of the client. The role also assists the supervisees in their personal and professional development.

    Other areas of work include:

Abuse, bereavement, coaching, cultural issues, gender identity and gender issues, mindfulness, generalised anxiety disorder, acute stress disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, self-harm, sexuality, spirituality, and more.

    Previous Client Testimonial 1:

“I contacted Joanne at a time of great vulnerability and was immediately reassured by her clear and supportive information to assist in arranging my first session. I found her to be easy to build trust and rapport with, and I was able to feel safe and supported very quickly.

So quickly indeed that I have been able to change my frame of mind from one of hopelessness, to be able to build resilience and take control of my life and my future again. I was surprised at how well I was able to work toward positive change, as I have used other counselling services before. I am considerably grateful for this improvement as I journey as a father to three young children, already feeling stronger as a result of counselling.

    Previous Client Testimonial 2:

“I wouldn’t say that I was a counselling sceptic, but rather someone who doesn’t like to admit that I’m not 100 percent, 100 percent of the time. So, I went into counselling with a very open mind and yet at the same time I did not expect it to work. How wrong could I have been?!

From meeting with Joanne, I have understood some of the reasoning behind my low points, how to spot them before they become a really big problem and also learnt how I am accountable for the way I feel. This is quite a contrast to the person who came in the door at the start of the sessions, who believed that everyone else’s behaviour and actions are indicative of why I am the way I am.

Joanne talks to you like a human, challenges you to think in a different – and often positive – way, but most importantly supports you and is respectful at every turn. I was keen to not get reliant on speaking with someone to help me, so my course of counselling was relatively short, but I know I have a friendly ear available in future should I need it. And, most importantly, I use the techniques and advice provided by Joanne on a daily basis.

For anyone experiencing feeling low, who can’t pinpoint why or can’t seem to cry for support loud enough with those closest to you – speak to Joanne. She’s great and you won’t regret it.”
